"UNAMET has to draw up a regulation providing guidance to campaign participants," he said after holding a regular meeting at the local police station. According to him, all parties, including the two rival groups, are allowed to launch a peaceful campaign on the acceptance or rejection of a wide-ranging autonomy offered by the Indonesian government. He also hoped under such regulation, all parties would avoid conflicts or resorting to violence. Regarding possible conflicts during the campaign period, Agus said, it has become a particular concern of all parties in this area. He also called on the people not to bring sharp weapons on the day of the direct ballot. At the same place, East Timor Deputy Police Commander Col. Maufi Sahudji said that the situation in the former Portuguese territory was favorable, and he has prepared his men to safeguard the campaigns and popular consultation.
