East Timor: Civil Police And Mily Liaison Personnel Reinforcement
Yet To Be Discussed

Dili, aug 7 (ANTARA)-Foreign Minister Ali Alatas said the
Australian government's plan or proposal to the United nations on
a reinforcement of UNAMET civil police personnel and military
liaison officers has not been discussed.

"No discussion has been made on the matter, and let us see the
development of the situation, and hear what the Indonesian
military and police have to say about it," he told the media in
Dili on saturday.

Indonesia is always trying to think and do the best for the
settlement of the East Timor issue, he pointed out.

The Australian papers The Age and The Sidney Morning Herald
recently reported that the United Nations has approved an
Australian proposal to reinforce international police personnel
and military liaison officers in the UN Mission in east Timor with
200 to 300 members.

Details on the proposed reinforcement will be taken up further by
United nations authorities and the Indonesian government in
Jakarta soon.

The United Nations' approval came following several weeks of
secret discussion by United Nations officials, Australian and
United States representatives.

In the meantime on different occasions a number of public leaders
who refused to reveal their identities have urged the Indonesian
government through its diplomats abroad to frustratethe
Australian wish.

If the plan is realized, they said, it would mean a failure of the
Indonesian diplomats to handle the East Timor question abroad.

"Not all the wishes of other countries associated with the
settlement of the East Timor issue must be granted, our government
must be firm in rejecting them," they said.
