"Besides, the pro-integrationists should also promote common perceptions on their mission," Gabriel da Costa told ANTARA here Wednesday. If pro-integrationists are not earnest in promoting the people's sympathy, da Costa said, the move to give East Timor autonomy under Indonesia would fail. He pointed out that in the present climate of uncertainty, there are opportunities for pro-integrationists to launch political maneuvers to convince the people that autonomy is the better choice. Citing in example, da Costa referred to the selection of campaigners for tha autonomy ballot by the pro-integrationists Forum for Unity, Democracy and Justice (FPDK) and East Timorese People's Front (BRTT). "They (the campaigners) should have started convincing the people (of the autonomy option) through door-to-door canvassing," da Costa observed. He also called on the newly established social and political alliance to realize the influence of the pro-independence group. According to da Costa, in East Timor's 13 districts, the pro- independence Falintil has influence over 70 percent of the voters. Meanwhile, in Dili, 65 percent are pro-independence, 10 percent are floating, while only 25 percent are pro-integration, he said. "They have such influence because they have indirectly campaigned since long ago," he said.
