EAST TIMOR

Fury over computer threat

Dili: Indonesia attacked the East Timorese independence activist and Nobel
laureate, Mr Jose Ramos Horta, yesterday over a plan to sabotage Indonesia's
computer network.

A senior official of the Foreign Ministry, Mr Dino Patti Djalal, said
Indonesia regarded the threat as "extremely serious" and had referred it to
the Ministry for Political and Security Affairs for "preventative action".

"This is terrorism against democracy," Mr Djalal said in the East Timor
capital, Dili.

Mr Ramos Horta warned this week of a "desperate and ferocious" international
campaign against Indonesia if Jakarta reneges on a United Nations-brokered
agreement to give the former Portuguese territory its independence should a
majority of East Timorese vote in favour at the August 30 ballot.

Diplomats and analysts monitoring developments in East Timor believe the vote
will overwhelmingly favour separating from Indonesia after 24 years of brutal
rule.

But powerful figures in Indonesia's armed forces and Government are strongly
opposed to the move.

Mr Ramos Horta said in Sydney that more than 100 computer wizards, mostly
teenagers in the United States and Europe, had told him they were preparing
the plan to bring Indonesia to a standstill, if the Government robbed East
Timor of its independence.

"I told them as long as it does not affect any lives, then go for it," Mr
Ramos Horta had said.

Mr Djalal told reporters the threat "is not conducive to his stature as a
Nobel laureate."
