PRESS RELEASE
19 August 1999

More innocent Achehnese abducted and feared killed by the merciless
Javanese-Indonesian troops in Acheh, Sumatra. Human rights abuses,
extra-judicial killing and abductions perpetrated the Javanese-Indonesian
troops upon innocent Achehnese have not ceased in Acheh, Sumatra.

>From the latest reports that the ASNLF received yesterday from Bireuen, some
40 km west of the natural gas port of Lhokseumawe, villagers working at their
rice fields were shot at random by the TNI/PPRM unit. The incident took place
on Monday 16 August at 1200 hrs at the village of Lapang Timu, Pante Ranub,
Grugok, whereby two men were abducted by the Javanese-Indonesian troops
patrolling the village. The two victims were; Muliadi Ibrahim alias Abdul
Rahman, 32; and Irsal, also 32 years old.

In separate incident but on the same day at about 1600 hrs, at the village of
Dajah Pandjoe, Gandapura, not far from the above-mentioned tragedy, three
Achehnese villagers were shot at for no reason whatsoever by the patrolling
TNI/PPRM forces. Yusuf Tengku Rasjid, 55, was wounded at his hands, while
working at his ricefield. But miraculously he was left where he was. Muliadi
Tengku Nurdinsyah, 26, suffered gun-wounds at his face and later brought to
the hospital by the villagers. The last victim Buchari Alamsyah, was abducted
at his home.

The safety of these men is of grave concern because their whereabouts are not
known. Moreover, is has been common practice of the Javanese-Indonesian
troops to torture or even kill those who are abducted.

We urgently call upon the international community especially governmental and
non-governmental bodies, human rights groups and dignitaries as well as
individuals to help put an end to these human rights atrocities perpetrated
by the Indonesian regime upon hapless Achehnese in Acheh, Sumatra.
