Independence leader calls for peace keepers

PETER CAVE: East Timorese independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, has made a last
ditch plea for armed peace-keepers to be sent into the territory.

Speaking to AM in Jakarta where he remains under house arrest, he accused the
most senior military leader in Indonesia of being behind the latest violence.
Ginny Stein spoke to the former guerilla leader, who is expected to become
East Timor's first president if independence is granted to the territory.

XANANA GUSMAO: I think that you understand that we are not in a position to
do more than what we already did and it is time for the international
community to react to this, to say something to the Indonesian government.

GINNY STEIN: But what can help?

XANANA GUSMAO: I think that we are so defenceless that we can only wait for
the international help.

GINNY STEIN: That means armed peacekeepers?

XANANA GUSMAO: I think so, I think so because only armed forces to enforce
peace in East Timor can correct the process because the Indonesian government
has profited, that they don't want to stop the violence. They don't want, it
is not that they don't be able but that they don't want to end violence
because it is a part of their strategy to keep East Timor as a part of
Indonesia. They will never avoid violence. They will pursue the violence as
their main political means.

PETER CAVE: Xanana Gusmao.
