Gusmao urges UN to deploy troops in E Timor

East Timorese resistance leader Xanana Gusmao has called on the United
Nations Security Council to send armed peacekeepers to the territory.

In an exclusive interview with the ABC, Mr Gusmao says yesterday's violence
in Dili has shown Indonesian security forces are unable to prevent violence.

Witnesses say at least five people and up to nine have been killed in violent
clashes between independence supporters and pro-Indonesia militiamen in East
Timor.

The killings underlined mounting tensions as a massive pro-Indonesian crowd
rallied on the penultimate day of campaigning for Monday's self-determination
vote in the territory.

Speaking at his Jakarta home, where he remains in detention, Xanana Gusmao
appealed for armed peacekeepers to immediately be sent to East Timor.

"Only with the military presence there, the process will be corrected in the
right direction," he said.

He said he was deeply saddened by the violence which was continuing to be
used to intimidate the population.

He accused Indonesian security forces at the highest level of being behind
the violence.

He says the attacks show the people of East Timor are defenceless against
those willing to resort to murder to intimidate the population ahead of the
poll.

He called on the people of the territory, particularly young people, to
remain at home ahead of Monday's ballot to avoid further bloodshed.

He urged them to consider that they would have the support of the
international community if independence is granted.

Meanwhile, Indonesian President BJ Habibie has confirmed that Xanana Gusmao
will be released in just over a week.

The Government says Gusmao will be freed a week after the votes are counted
in East Timor's independence referendum and will receive an amnesty on the
rest of his jail term.
