E Timor: TNI-Interfet Misunderstanding Settled Amicably

Jakarta, sept 23 (ANTARA)- A misunderstanding between the
Indonesian Defence Force (TNI) and International Force for East
Timor (Interfet) was Thursday successfully settled by their
respective leaders.

Indonesia's martial law commander Maj Gen Kiki Syahnakri said in
Dili Thursday, the TNI and Interfet had solved the
misunderstanding amicably.

Kiki slammed foreign media for erroneously reporting that there had
been an exchange of fire between the TNI and Interfet.

Meanwhile, according to a press statement issued by the TNI High
Command, the misunderstanding in Dili occured when Interfet
personnel were trying to disperse a group of Timorese looters at a
spot which happened to be close to a TNI station.

At the particular moment, the Indonesian militarymen were busy
emptying the station's munitions and arms depot and sending its
contents to Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara.

The Interfet soldiers, seeing the TNI members carrying cases and
other objects, thought they were looters, and fired some warning
shots.

The tension that followed, however, was quickly resolved by both
sides, the statement said.
