And once again, the= =20 urban poor were accused of being "thugs" ["preman=92=92]. The ordinary= people=20 are still regarded as uncontrolled, easily manipulated masses. It is as=20 though we are always stupid and ignorant of politics. Ordinary people have= =20 been subjected to this treatment for more than 400 years, from the time of= =20 the colonial occupation of this land. To this day the poor people continue= to=20 be branded as criminals, to be humiliated, and subjected to tactics to=20 fragment them and to pit them against each other. The poor are excluded from= =20 political action in their own homeland. Salim, Zaenal, Dany, Fadli=97who died in the 24th September incident=97you= were=20 given no processions to commemorate the lives you sacrificed. You were= given=20 no honours. There were no "garden parties" at the palace for you. Nor were= =20 those who disappeared recognised. The elite in this country, and our brothers and sisters who are presidential= =20 candidates, have not issued any statements about your deaths. The lives of= =20 ordinary people have been sacrificed in even greater numbers in Aceh, Ambon,= =20 and other regions of Indonesia. And lives of ordinary people have been=20 sacrificed in Timor L=92Este. We thus call for a "National Week of Mourning" by flying the flag at=20 half-mast from Monday to Saturday, 27th September-2nd October l999. Our common concern and action will be a contribution towards an Indonesia=20 that is just and democratic.
