E Timor: Govt Deplores Aussie Soldiers Attack In Indon Territory

Jakarta, Oct 11 (ANTARA)- The Indonesian government deplores the
intrusion into Indonesian territory, the killing of an Indonesian
policeman and the wounding of three other Indonesians Sunday by
Australian soldiers in the International Force for East Timor
(Interfet), Foreign Minister Ali Alatas said.

"The incident is truly deplorable. Although we are still
investigating what exactly happened, we explore it," Alatas told
reporters at the Merdeka Palace here on Monday.

The minister said the Interfet excuse that they had been using an
old map of the border between East Timor and East Nusa Tenggara
was rather "strange".

"This is rather strange. It is hard to believe that the Interfet
which is fitted out with very sophisticated equipment can make
such an error," he said.

Aside from deploring the Australian soldiers' action, the
Indonesian government would also lodge a protest.

"But the Indonesian stance is that we deplore it," he said.

Alatas added Indonesian's stance on boundary tresspasing was
clear. "To us, it is already clear. If they violate our border, we
will react firmly. This stance was already announced by the
Minister for Defence/Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI)
and we won't just stay calm," he said.

ANTARA quoted witnesses, Amandus Simanjuntak, 50, and Lukas Moruk,
80, as saying that some 120 white Interfet soldiers crossed into
East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), about 200 meters from the natural border
line of Mota Ain river, and attacked the Indonesian border post at
about 12:30 p.m.

The Interfet troops crossed the border with five Armoured
Personnel Carries (APCs), which stop in line and dropped the
troops. After dropping the combat troopers, they ponted their
weapons to the border post, witnesses said.

The troopers then spread out to variuos places around the post and
continued firing without pause for 15 minutes. But the Indonesian
personnel did not return fire, witnesses said.

Ari Sudibyo of a Mobile Brigade unit in East Java was killed,
while his two colleagues, Sudarto and agus Susanto, and a 43-year-
old civilian Alcino barros were injured.
