E Timor: TNI Won't Tolerate Any Interfet's Attempt To Set Up Mily
Base

Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara, Oct 8 (ANTARA)- Chief of the Udayana
Regional Military Command Maj. Gen. Adam R Damiri has said the
Indonesian Military (TNI) will not tolerate if the International
Force for East Timor (Interfet) keeps trying to set up a military
base in East Nusa Tenggara's Atambua area which shares borders
with East Timor.

"I have made instruction not to let the Interfet set up a base in
Atambua area. I reaffirm, never let this happen. If it does, we
will take a measures against the Interfet," he told the press here
on Friday.

He made the comment after seeing organic and hand-made riffles
confiscated from the militia by the police and Indonesian army at
the NTT Police office. The confiscation was made during a month-
long operation after the East Timor ballot was held.

"We don't want to arrest them as the situation at that time was in
emergency. But we have to confiscate their weapons to prevent
violence among the people," he said.

He said all the confiscated weapons, except the organic weapons
owned by the TNI, would be destroyed.

On unrest in the bordering area near Atambua with the arrival of
the Australia-let Interfet, he said what was done by the Interfet
was still normal.

"I see, Interfet has not entered the Indonesian territory. If the
Interfet is entering Atambua, the first thing we will do is to
warm them. And if they ignore it, we might take a special
measure," he said.

He, however, did not give details on the measures but warned the
UN set-up force not to try to set up a military base in Atambua
and launch a military operation in Indonesia territory.

On the inhuman treatment by the Interfet to the East Timorese, he
said he deplored the action. "Is their mandate here to take harsh
action against civilian?" he asked stressing that the mandate is
not like that.

The mandate is to create peace and secure condition in the former
Portuguese colony after the ballot.
