MALUKU COMMUNITY AGREES TO STOP CLASHES

Jakarta, Jan 18 (ANTARA) - The Maluku community ended a
reconciliation meeting here on Tuesday with an agreement to put
an immediate halt to communal clashes in their province.

They also agreed to foster genuine brotherhood and reconciliation
in their efforts to rehabilitate facilities damage in riots as
well as to build local people's mentality.

In the agreement read by Maluku Governor M. Saleh Latuconcina
flanked by the Religious Affairs Ministy's Secretary General
Marwan Sarijo, chief of the Indonesia Ulemas Council (MUI)'s
branch in Maluku KH RR Hasanussi, Amboina diocese bishop Mgr. PC
Mandagi Msc, the participant of the meeting agreed to
immedialetly end clashes, hostilities and riots which claimed
many people and inflictid material losses.

The Maluku community supported the steps and policies being taken
the govenrment and the National Defence Forces (TNI) to
immediately put an end to riots and clashes in the province.

The religious figure who attend the meeting called on all Maluku
residents to support the steps and policies, for instance, by
handling their sharp weapons to security personnel.

In addition, religious adherents in the province were also asked
to firmly stick to the norms of their respective religion, offer
mutual apologies and pray for God Almighty to be able to rebuild
true brotherhood on the basis of noble religious norms.

They also asked the central government to take step and policies
conducive for the creation of brotherhood among Maluku residents
anywhere and give material support to rehabilitate public
utilities and restore the life of nationhood and statehood in
Maluku immediately.

They also called on all state leaders, social figures, experts
and the mass media to help the local administration create
peaceful situation by adopting wise attitudes and refraining from
making any statement that may worsen the unrest in Maluku.

They also asked the authorized parties to take measures against
any body found mastermind on inciting riots in Maluku,
irrespective of their religion.

The agreement also called on the entire Indonesian nation not be
easily influence by news about riot in Maluku that may triggers
fresh riots both in Maluku and other parts of the country, which
will eventually lead to national dissintegration.

They expected the religious affairs minister and religious
council to encourage and initiate the creation of healthy
religious life based on the true religious norms.

Governor Latuconcina said the peace agreement served as moral one
theat the Maluku community must follow up on. But violations of
the agreement were not subject to penalty, expect moral sanction.

"Hence, we need to follow up on the agreement by holding a number
of meetings at provincial level, especially in riot-prone areas
in Maluku," he said.

He also underscored the need to identify a number of problems
that trigger conflicts by forming an investigating team to
establish their causes.

"By doing so there will be pressure from the local people to
avoid problems (that may trigger riots)," he said.

Meanwhile, chairman of MUI's branch in Maluku, KH RR Hasanussi
said his party felt obliged to socialize the peace agreement
among Moslems.

He said his party had tried to curb emotions among Moslems not to
get involved in conflicts. "Islam teaches its followers not to
make any destruction on earth. That's why, we will try to curb
any effort made by Moslem to cause destruction," he said.

Amboina diocese bishop Mgr. PC Mandagi Msc meanwhile offered an
apology to Moslems and Christians because, however small,
Chatolics also shared blame in the Maluku conflict.

"We hope that the conflict in Maluku can be immediately stopped
so that life in the area can return to normal and peace be
created," he said.

Chief of the Maluku Protestant Churches Synod SP Titaley STh
expressed his commitment as part of efforts to put a halt to
conflicts in Maluku.
