"During the New Orde era, they (members of the TNI) were used merely as a tool of power so that they made systematic and structural mistakes. That is why, in this reform era, things will be much better if the TNI-basing campaign is ended," he told newsmen here. According to Rais, TNI members are also parts of elements of the nation who have dignity. Thus, if the anti-TNI campaign continued, the TNI might be prompted to take measures that would hamper the nation's efforts to resolve its problems. On a rumours, firstly aired by US Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke, that the TNI would conduct a putsch to topple the legitimate government, he called on the Indonesian people not to easily be made confused by such an issue. "We don't care wether it is the statement of a diplomat, general or even minister of any foreign countries, we need not listen to theirs," he said. On a phenomenom in which a show of force and mass mobilization are always used by certain parties to pressure their political rivals, Rais, who was recently mobbed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) loyalists warned the nation that it might mark the awakening of Fascism and Nazism in Indonesia. I am worried that fascism and nazism, where the masses show their physical power by screamig to oust and pressure their political rivals with impolite words and phrases," he said. Rais said such a phenomenom was counterproductive for Indonesia to build a healthy democracy because it could spark other people to react and conduct similar action. In this regard, he called on all parties to avoid mass mobilization, massive gatherings and the like if the committe was not sure that it could handle the masses. In another part of his press statement issued following a meeting with 50 visiting US businessmen here, he also asked the TNI and government to detain any detected provocateurs. He, however, refused to mention names of the suspects, saying that it was Attonery General's rights to announce it and it is the security units authorities to find details on the ground. "If I know the names, I don't have the right to mention them," he said. Sociologist of the state-run University of Indonesia Thamrin A. Tamagola, also a member of reconciliation team for Maluku case, has tipped four names of people, allegedly involved in the sectarian clashes in Maluku isles. In this interview with RRI Pro2FM last Monday, he mentioned the names of Buce Sarpara, Yoris Raweyai, Sultan of Ternate Mudaffar Syah and Dicky Wattimena.
