RI GETS AUSTRALIA'S SUPPORT TO AVOID INT'L TRIBUNAL

Jakarta, Jan 25 (ANTARA) Australia has given a signal to support
Indonesian in avoiding a possible international tribunal related
to the post-ballot violence in East Timor last year.

The hint was conveyed by Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander
Downer, when he was visiting Indonesia earlier this week and
held talks with Presiden Abdurrahman Wahid and a number of
cabinet ministers.

"The first thing we will have to look into is the process of
investigation applied by Indonesia," Downer said in a press
conference at Borobudur Hotel, prior to leaving Indonesia
Monday.

Australia will support Indonesia in the implementation of
investigative process in conjunction with the alleged violation
of human rights in East Timor - where a number of military
officers are accused of being involved, as long as the
Commission Investigation Right Abuses (KPP HAM) for East Timor
could show a good performance.

"The process of investigation carried out by Indonesia needs to
convince us (Australia) that those allegedly implicated in
rights abuses could be brought to justice," he said.

Canberra often sees that the government of Indonesia is serious
in attempting to bring the guilty to court, he said, adding that
Australia will never endeavour to interfere in the process of
investigation.

"We will never interfere or attempt to influence the process of
investigation, let alone to take it over," he stressed.

However, it is not impossible for Australia show a such big
contribution to the settlement of the case.

"If the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) is
really in need of information, we will always be available to
help the government of Indonesia in unraveling the case," he
cited.

As to the information of international tribunal, Minister Alwi
Shihab had earlier intensified his lobby with UN Security
Council, 20 permanent representative of foreign countries at the
UN and the US Secretary of State, Madeline Albright with a
mission to persuade them not to allay their support for the
formation of international tribunal for East Timor case.
