"We cannot be equalized with Rwanda or the former Yogoslavia," said Muladi, who is serving as consultant to a group of lawyers defending military officers believed to be responsible for or to have abetted the abuses. Speaking said a case could be brought to an international court if it involved threats to international security and peace. "What is important for Indonesia now is settling the case in a national court impartially and independently," he said. On a separate occasion, State Minister for Human Rights Affairs Hasballah M Saad said he supported the idea of having the case handled by a national court. "An Indonesian court has to be able to try cases of human rights violation in the country," he said. "We will prove to the world that we can and will try cases of human rights violations in our own courts of justice," he said. He said Indonesia has already shown its seriousness dealing with such a case by setting up the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM). "Now we will prove that we can implement it. Let us take the opportunity to prove it," he said. Hasballah said to accomplish the task, Indonesia could ask international parties to serve as consultants.
