TNI CHIEF DENIES MILITARY WAS SLOW IN HANDLING MALUKU CONFLICTS

Jakarta, Feb 10 <ANTARA>-Chief of the National Defence Forces
<TNI> Admiral Widodo AS denied here Thursday that the military had
been slow in handling sectarian conflicts in different locations
in Maluku.

"We have been taking intensive steps both from the security aspect
and reconciliatory measures," Widodo said at a working meeting
with the House of Representatives Commission I which deals with
defence and security affairs among other things.

According to Widodo, clear ideas from all parties were needed to
bring the situation in Maluku back to normal.

He said although the tensions had abated, reconciliatory measures
must be continued to prevent flareups which could damage public
facilities now under rehabilitation.

Widodo noted the sectarian conflicts in Maluku had cost thousands
of lives and triggered high emotion leading to mutual revenge
between the conflicting camps.
