ANTARA, FEBRUARY 10, 2000

TNI DOES ITS BEST TO CONTROL SECURITY SITUATION-MILY CHIEF

Jakarta, Feb 10 <ANTARA>-The Indonesian Defence Force <TNI> is
always ready to do its best to maintain peace in the Unitary State
of Indonesia, its chief, Adm Widodo AS, said Thursday.

"The TNI is always prepared to protect Indonesia against any
security disturbance which threatens the country's integrity and
sovereignity," Widodo said during a meeting with the House of
Representatives' Commission on defence and information.

During the meeting, he was accompanied by Army chief of staff, Gen
Tyasno Sudarto, and TNI chief for general affairs, Lt Gen Suadi
Marasabessy.

Widodo said the military backs the government policy of holding
dialogs and using political, social and religious approaches to
end the communal conflicts that have broken out in several parts
of the country.

According to him, the TNI believes in upholding the law.

He also noted that the military, in its effort to settle conflicts
in the country, faces such obstacles as legal uncertainties and
inadequate equipment.

The TNI, he said, understands that it is better to take preventive
measures that to let the situation lead to riots.

Touching on several cases that still need to be settled, such as
the killing of East Javanese labor leader Marsinah and the
Semanggi tragedy, Widodo said the TNI committed to solving them.

He noted that it is not the intention of the TNI to leave them
unresolved but that the military faces such problems as lack of
evidence.

"The TNI will always uphold the supremacy of the law. Thus if
military members violate the law, the TNI will not cover the up,"
he stressed.

SEA CONTROL

Widodo further said that the Indonesian Navy has also conducted
operations in the Malacca Straits, in the waters of Aceh and in
the South China Sea.

In addition, the TNI has also made patrols in coordination with
neighboring countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, he said.

On rotations among military officials, Widodo said they done based
on tour of duty and tour of the area.
