Canada Upbeat on RI's Future

JAKARTA (IO) - Canadian Ambassador Kenneth Sunquist says his
government is pleased with the improving political and economic
climate in Indonesia, and feels bilateral relations will remain
strong.

"We are very optimistic. Canada is one of the best supporters of
Indonesia, both politically and economically. In CGI
[Consultative Group on Indonesia], Canada was the financial
partner, we want to keep this partnership," Sunquist told the
Observer after a meeting with People's Consultative Assembly
(MPR) Speaker Amien Rais at parliament in Jakarta yesterday.

The ambassador said the current political and economic
atmosphere in Indonesia has interested Canadian investors,
adding that Indonesia is Canada's largest trading partner in
Asian.

"Indonesia has more investments from Canada than any other
countries in Asia. We will continue that. We have
businessmen coming here every day."

Sunquist said yesterday was his first meeting with Rais since he
was elected MPR speaker. "We talked about Canada-Indonesia
relations, mainly on economic and political conditions in
Indonesia. I think Amien Rais is the best speaker that has
described what the future of Indonesia is going to look like,"
he said.
