World Bank Rejects Indon Funds Misuse Claim

The World Bank says there is no evidence its funds were misused
by Indonesia as it fought to retain control of East Timor.

SBS television has aired a report alleging $12 million,
earmarked for welfare and development, was channelled by Jakarta
from the World Bank to militia groups in East Timor.

However, the World Bank has rejected the allegations.

In a statement, the bank says documents alleging misuse of funds
by the World Bank have been shown to be false.

The bank says its acknowledges it must be concerned about how
the government of Indonesia spends its money, and says it needs
to work with Jakarta to improve accountability programs.

The statement concludes by saying the bank is ready to review
any new evidence that would show money has been misused in East
Timor.
