It was a myth that Indonesia had not condemned violations of human raights in East Timor, Mr Arizal said on his first visit to Perth. Many Australians had overlooked that the Indonesian people had been on the streets demonstrating against the perpetrators of human rights abuses in East Timor, Aceh and other places. Another myth was that Australia had a bigger arsenal. Jakarta's defence plans were not aimed at other countries but were about protecting the country's resources. "When we talk about (acquiring) ships for the navy it is because people are stealing our fish and yet there is this myth as if we are a threat," he said. Mr Arizal said another myth was that hordes of Indonesians would want to come to Australia in a crisis. Yet even after the major crisis of 1997 there were fewer Indonesians in Australia that people from other countries. One more myth was that Indonesia somehow pushed a notion of Asian values that excluded democracy. Mr. Arizal, 51, a former ambassador to the United Nations, said Indonesia had become a democratic country and wanted supremacy of law, referring to difficulties apprebending potential illegal immigrants to Australia who were legally in Indonesia on tourist visas. Mr Arizal has even found a myth held by some Indonesians to be untrue--that Australians do not like Indonesians on a personal level. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Didistribusikan tgl. 26 Apr 2000 jam 06:48:48 GMT+1 oleh: Indonesia Daily News Online <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.Indo-News.com/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
