Shihab: No need for foreign intervention in Maluku

JAKARTA (IO) - Foreign Affairs Minister Alwi Shihab says there
is no need to seek foreign help to resolve conflicts in the
province of Maluku, adding that the government has enough
potency to create peace in the restive area.

He emphasized that steps taken by the government to resolve the
conflict have also been supported by foreign countries.

"We have the capability to resolve the conflict by ourselves.
Our actions are supported by the US government and they hope
that the conflict will soon end," Shihab told the press after
addressing a meeting of legislators from 28 countries at
Parliament in Jakarta yesterday.

He said the actions taken by the government include a decision
to restrict outsiders from entering the Maluku province and a
policy to launch strict patrols over the smuggling of hand-made
weapons to the province.

" Foreign countries understand that this is not an easy problem.
But they believe the Indonesian government will be able to
resolve the conflict," he said.

Shihab said the US government has urged the Indonesian military
to launch prompt action in dealing with the bloody conflict.

"They want the Indonesian government make a quick response to
the conflict. This morning US Ambassador to Indonesia Robert S.
Gelbard expressed his support to the responsiveness of the
Indonesian government,' he added.

He reiterated that the Indonesian government disagreed with
military assistance from foreign countries. "I disagree with
military assistance. We can accept any kind of assistance but
military assistance," he said.
