Navy chief vows to attack vessels carrying weapons

JAKARTA (IO) - Navy Chief Admiral Achmad Sutjipto yesterday
warned against those trying to smuggle weapons to warring groups
in the Maluku Islands, saying that the Indonesian Navy will
attack and sink any vessels carrying weapons.

He reiterated that if any vessel allegedly carrying weapons
ignores the warnings, the Navy will sink the vessel. "If the
vesselretaliates, we will attack and sink it," he said after
witnessing a hand over ceremony at the Navy Command School
(Seskoal) in Jakarta yesterday.

During the ceremony, command was handed over from Rear Admiral
Edi Suyadi to Rear Admiral Budiman Djoko Said.

The Navy Chief said that until now the Indonesian Navy had only
given warnings to any vessels allegedly bringing weapons to
Maluku. He added he has told his staff to take stern action
against intending arms smugglers.

Sutjipto said the action was necessary to support a peaceful
solution to problems in the area as well as the recovery
process. Operations are aimed to help the local military command
put an end to the conflict.

He acknowledged the existence of strategic entry points for
would-be smugglers.

"But we will keep on monitoring those areas. And if needed we
will add more personnel in those areas," he said.

Sutjipto added that his team had already detained 17 vessels in
waters surrounding the regions. In most cases, Navy personnel
had confiscated the weapons and told the people to leave the
area. "We detained 10 vessels before the introduction of the
civil emergency status and seven vessels after that," he said.
