GOV`T LODGES SECOND PROTEST OVER GAM ATTACK

Banda Aceh, Aceh, July 13 (ANTARA) - The government has again
lodged a complaint at the Joint Forum in Switzerland over the
armed attack launched by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) against
government troops in northern Aceh last Tuesday.

"I am very concerned about the incident. GAM is violating the
agreement signed by the (government and the movement),"
Indonesian Police Senior Superintendent Ridwan Karim, the
government`s representative to the joint commission for
security, told newsmen here Thursday.

It was the second time Jakarta has done so since the government
and GAM signed the Humanitarian Pause, a ceasefire agreement
which took effect last month.

At least two policemen were reportedly in critical condition
following Tuesday`s attack.

Karim said the government regrets the incident because the
Humanitarian Pause stipulates that the government and the
movement should avoid attacking each other.

The government filed its first complaint two weeks ago after
three policemen were killed in Nisam subdistrict, also in
northern Aceh.

GAM admitted that its troops had attacked the government`s
mobile brigade in Blang Kareng in Nisam on Sunday (July 2),
killing three members.

Meanwhile, GAM members and policemen again exchanged fire on
Wednesday (July 12) in Kutamakmur subdistrict.

North Aceh Police chief, Superintendant Syafei Aksal, claimed
that the two victims were rebel fighters, but GAM officials
insisted they were civilians.

Aceh is a staunchly Moslem province at the northern tip of
Sumatra island, where rebels have been fighting since 1976 for
an independent Islamic state.

As many as 5,000 people have been killed in Aceh in the past
decade, mostly civilians.

To stop the violence, the government and the GAM signed what
they called the Humanitarian Pause in Switzerland on May 12.

However, at least 53 people have been killed in hostile
operations since the Humanitarian Pause took effect on June 2.
The two parties also established two separate commissions to
monitor the ceasefire and begin humanitarian aid operations.
