ARMY CHIEF PARRIES COUNTERFEIT-MONEY ALLEGATIONS

Jakarta, Aug 25 (ANTARA) - Army Chief-of-Staff Gen Tyasno
Sudarto said here Thursday reports circulating in society that
the Indonesian Army, he himself in particular, was involved in
money counterfeiting activity were "nothing but slander."

The reports were based on the alleged confessions of Ismail
Putra, a self-styled army major, being tried by the Central
Jakarta Court of Justice in a forged bank-notes case.

Ismail recently alleged in the court he was a member of the
Army`s intelligence branch and in this capacity had been
assigned to help distribute counterfeit bills.

He claimed Tyasno Sudarto was behind an Army-supported money
counterfeiting ring to raise money to finance its intelligence
operations in East Timor.

"These allegations are nothing but slander designed to cause the
downfall of the Army chief as well as the Army," Tyasno said.

"I am not a traitor of the state and the Army. But I don`t want
to be affected by this conspiracy."

Tyasno said an Army investigation of Ismail`s claim that he was
an army major working in its intelligence branch had established
that Ismail was nowhere registered as an armyman.

The Army chief said the Army`s commitment was clear enough. It
was to restore its image in the eyes of the people through
discipline, professionalism, solidarity, morality and a high
degree of esprit de corps.

He said the police should have rechecked the statements made by
Ismail Putra.

Each statement made by the defendant should have been rechecked
in order to get at the truth, especially as Ismail had referred
to nobody less than the chief of staff of the Indonesian Army,
he said.

"This is a conspiracy directed at me and the Army. But we must
remain cool-headed in facing this. I am confident that the truth
will prevail in the end," he said.

The Army chief also appealed to all officers and men in the
force not to be influenced by the conspiratory acts.
