Gelbard along with Indonesian Police Chief General Roesdihardjo on Wednesday signed an agreement on US assitance for the police including training, technical aid and equipment. The US embassy in Jakarta disclosed on Wednesday that the assistance was meant to promote the professional skills of Indonesian police personnel to international standards especially as a democratic police force to uphold human rights. The grant is also designed to enhance the skills of the police in detection, investigation and the eradication illicit narcotic drug trafficking in Indonesia. The grant for equipment estimated at 1.7 million dollars will be disbursed in three years, and the aid in the form of training will be conducted by American senior law enforcing officials. Under the agreement, the police will also receive gear to face mobs and demonstrations including shields, helmets and canes.
