GOLKAR FIGURE SLAMS COHEN`S ARROGANT ATTITUDE

Jakarta, Sept 20(ANTARA) - A noted exponent of the Golkar party,
Pinantun Hutasoit, slammed US Defence Minister William Cohen`s
arrogant attitude toward Indonesia.

"It`s not a problem, if Cohen has asked Indonesia to clarify the
Atambua case. But by bullying this country with the sanction of
embargo, it means the US no longer respects our sovereignty," he
said here on Tuesday.

East Timor is not only Indonesia`s problem, he stressed.

Dating back to the past history, the US was also one of the
supporters which desired the incorporation of East Timor into
Indonesia.

"If in the past the US supported East Timor`s integration, now
they (the US) are trying to sacrific us. Where is their moral
and humanitarian responsibility," he said, adding: " In fact,
Indonesia in the past did not want 700,000 East Timorese people
to integrate with Indonesia."

Pinantun really deplored Cohen`s statement and warning that
Indonesia could no longer be treathened and isolated by the
international community, if it failed to disarm the militias in
West Timor.

In a meeting with a number of Indonesian high rangking
officials, Cohen also insisted that Indonesia and its military
should immediately disarm and disband the militia group in West
Timor. If it`s left unheeded, international sanctions would be
imposed on Indonesia.

Pinantun further said recent political developments in Indonesia
were deplorable. But, if Indonesia`s nationalism was being
trampled on , there was no other way except to return to the
maintenance of nationalism.

"Let us not allow ourselves to get entrapped in their scenario
which is designed to disunite us," he said.

Pinantun called on all sides to immediately understand the
country`s problem in the sense that the nation is currently
facing heavier tests in many sectors, including in politics,
economy and culture.

"It will be difficult to remain united, if parts of the nation
are being provoked by outsiders who do not want to see us as an
advanced and peaceful country," he stressed. (U.DM1/RSI-
