Here's a description of the fun time I had yesterday in hopes that
someone can explain what happened and that others may be spared some
pain.

We are using three RS6000 530's as file/database servers, and one C20
as a fileserver. We wanted to move about 35GB from one of the 530's
to the C20, decommission the 530, make the C20 a db server as well,
and have the C20 end up with the same hostname and IP address as the
530 had.

We ended up with a totally corrupted VLDB. According to the very
helpful Transarc folk, this was because of the /usr/afs/local/sysid
file on the C20 being different from that on the 530. Perhaps
someone can suggest how we could have accomplished what we wanted
to do.

This would not have been as bad as it was, had one of our 4GB drives
not chosen this particular instant of history to break. The
combination of a corrupted VLDB and a broken drive made it much more
difficult to restore the volumes which had been on the bad drive from
tape.

We also had a further problem with 'no more processes' which we think
is attributable to running an AIX 3.2.5 version of 'monitor' under AIX
4.1.4.

It was a character-building experience.
