31GB of functioning AFS partitions say that you can unplug a disk from
a 3.2.5 system and plug it into a 4.1.4 system and have it work. I have
fsck'ed all the filesystems under 4.1.4 (with AFS fsck, of course).
There seems to be some evidence here that you can't go the other way.
Another site at Cornell tried fsck'ing a 3.2.5 filesystem by booting
from a 4.1.4 CD. This filesystem was then unusable by the original
3.2.5 system. There could have been other problems, but this is
highly suggestive and fits well with your concern above.
