One of the things we have done at Rose-Hulman to help
with this type of problem is to trim the chunksize
down tremedously. That way only a much smaller portion
of the file is cached in.
Operations to large files (such as un-tar'ing files)
seem to suffer with the small chunksize, so I'd
just try experimenting with various numbers. (On
our NeXT's we have the chunksize all the way down
to 8K).
