   Note that when you shut down to single user mode a minor hitch arises
   from the fact that the afsd does not die.

   If you try to return to multiuser mode (type ^D), then the nfsd's will
   start up again and you get another panic.

Hmm.  I wonder.. could (potentially latent) support for the NFS<->AFS
translator in the AFS kernel extension be screwing things up?

I haven't looked at the source closely, but I seem to recall seeing
code in passing which implied that part of the AFS startup code
revectored the syscall made by nfsd into some afs code so the
translator could gain control at the right time.

If you're handy (and comfortable with) hot-patching a running kernel
(kids, don't try this at home :-) ) (a) see if I'm correct, and (b)
patch the old entry back after AFS starts up, and see if you can
restart nfsd without crashing.
