As of AIX 3.2.4 IBM x_st_mgr now uses port 9000. We switched from 7000 to
9000 when we noticed the problems I described. We had to do this all at
once since we use NIS. The problem persisted until we upgraded the
XStation server to AIX 3.2.4.

The 'normal support channels' confirm that this is fixed in 3.3. I am
extremely pleased with this kind of responsiveness.
