For a hardware fix, you can try:

        IBM PN 58F2861
        PRINTER/TERMINAL INTERPOSER
        A14F8000000

This is one of those connectors that came with your machine in the
fancy plastic book-style folder. On the off chance that you have
thrown it away by now, the connector is a M/F DB-25 with the
following pin out:

        Female Male

        1 ----------------------- Hood/Chassis ground

        2 ------------------\/--- 2
        3 ------------------/\--- 3

        4 ------------------\/--- 4
        5-------------------/\--- 5

        6 -------------------.--- 20
        8 -------------------|

        7 ----------------------- 7

       20 -------------------.--- 6
                             |--- 8

We use these to connect a group of IBM RS-6K console ports into a
serial multiplexer. The multiplexer concentrates the consoles onto
a single workstation. The individual consoles can then be accessed
from across the net by X-windowing into the console concentrator
workstation. Saves quite a bit of glass (and rack space) in the machine
room.
