I would suggest that sacrificing this design goal is less risky
in the long run than any of the alternative solutions that have
been suggested...  You *are* CVS-tracking the CVS sources, right?
Makes it easy to manage local patches, especially minor ones like
this is likely to be.

Indeed!  But as you've obviously concluded, an interim solution
is called for.  Might as well make it a robust one; you might
have to live with it for a while :-/
