Karl Fogel's book suggests that the "val-tags" writing despite of
read only operations is a bug which should have been fixed in the
time since he wrote about it. That's when I considered opening
it for write permissions a workaround until the next program
update. Did I miss something? Is there a list of gotchas to
check against?
