saslpasswd:generic failure

After configuring sasl and imap....section 8....add cyrus
adminstrator.../urs/local/sbin/saslpasswd cyrus
I get saslpasswd:generic failure
then of course testing imap also bombs....
Do I go back and reconfigure sasl or do I start with a fresh
system....reload linux ?
