The documentation is old.  It has been updated in CVS.

You probably don't have any SASL mechanisms available.  Does IMAP or POP3 shoudl
any mechs?
 
I put  "sasl_pwcheck_method: passwd" in my imapd.conf file.
It works because the password map comes from the nis server with crypted passwords. I do not need an other daemon to read the shadow map.

I tried to put "sasl_pwcheck_method: sasldb" and to create an account with saslpasswd, it works too.
