Hi Nancy,

A contract would be fine. Yes, I do keynotes. That is what I usually do. Let me know what I can do to assist.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks, - would you like a contract? Also, do you do keynote type presentations as well? Your expertise is so important and is closely aligned to Iowa's focus on school improvement, reading and technology.

Sure. We will hold this. I will need to check with my team of doctoral students to be certain that they are interested and free at this time. how about if you check with your group and I will check with mine? Let me know when you have more information and I should have some by then, too.

Cheers,

Don

Wow, this sounds great. We have a board meeting on Jan. 18th and I will be able to confirm our plans at that time. For now, however, can I have you hold the Oct. dates for the four of you.

Thanks much,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Let me throw out an idea for your consideration.

You also invite 3 of my exceptional doctoral students to each give two
presentations on increasing reading performance by Integrating the
Internet into the classroom. They will present on related but
different sessions (integrating literature and the Internet, email
projects in the classroom, reading comprehension on the Internet,
increasing reading performance through collaborative projects, useful
software for increasing reading achievement, using Read/Write.Think,
providing school leadership with Internet technologies to increase
reading achievement, etc.) You provide travel, meals, and one night's
hotel expenses for each of them (they can share a room) as well as me.
You divide the $1,200 honorarium between my students. (Nothing for me
except expenses). That way, we could focus a whole-day series of
sessions on improving reading (and writing) in K-12 classrooms through
the integration of Internet resources.

I have an incredibly talented group of doctoral students who do these
sessions with me around the country. We are going out to TRLD in San
Francisco next month to do something similar. We do exceptional work in
this area.

Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers,

Don

Our conference targets three groups; classroom teachers,
technology/network specialists and library media specialists. In the
past, our conference had a 1200-1500 member attendance, but in recent
years, for all sorts of reasons, our attendance has declined and now
we are seeing numbers around 500.

As far as the format of your presentation(s), I was hoping you might
offer some guidance. In Iowa, as elsewhere, we are feeling tremendous
pressure to increase reading proficiency and reading comprehension at
all grade levels. Several of our schools are already on the School
In Need of Improvement (SINI) list and we expect that others will be
added to this list as districts fail to keep pace with their
trajectory for improvement in accordance with the NCLB mandates.

All of our districts must write a Comprehensive School Improvement
Plan and develop action plans for improving student achievement in
reading, math and science. The Iowa Department of Education has
worked hard to provide districts with models and research to guide
them in their efforts for improvement. One area that may be of
interest is the Content Network website, which is reviewing research
in the areas of reading, math and science in order to provide
districts with the best information available on school and academic
improvement as well as teacher quality and professional development.

There are several other initiatives in the state that impact
technology and learning and I would be happy to share more of this
information if you are interested.

I am thinking that we could benefit most from your knowledge and
expertise by having you present several featured speaker sessions. On
Sunday, we also run a "workshop" format, so perhaps you have a
hands-on presentation that would be appropriate as well. Could you
recommend specific presentations based on the above information?

As far as travel and an honorarium, we will certainly pay for all your
expenses and want to pay you an appropriate amount for an honorarium.
In the past, our featured presenters typically request $1200/day for
presenting at out conference. Please let me know if this is on target
or what you generally receive for your presentations.

Thanks for your willingness to present in Iowa,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,

Great to hear from you. It looks like I am free on Oct. 10-11, 2004.
I would be honored to support your important work but can you
provide more details? Is this a keynote, a featured presentation, or
something else? How many people normally attend your conference?
What are their backgrounds? What issues do you face in Iowa that
will be important at this conference for me to address?

Also, I guess we should talk about expenses. I assume that you will
pick up travel expenses and provide an honorarium. People always ask
me what I charge. I prefer to leave this in the hands of conference
organizers. AlI I ask is that it be comparable to other speakers in
the past. I do not do these things to get rich. I do not, however,
like to have my generosity abused. This approach usually meets
everyone's needs pretty well.

Keep me posted.

Cheers,

Don

Hello,
Last year I listened to your presentations at FETC and sent you an
email inquiring if you would be available to present at our fall
ITEC conference in Iowa. It did not work out for our 2003 conference
but we don't give up easily <grin>.

Would you be available to present at our fall 2004 conference Oct.
10-11 in Des Moines, IA? We are an ISTE affiliate and would really
benefit from your presentations on literacy and technology.

Thank you for considering this request,
