I've been thinking about the same thing the past few days. I put the newest version of OpenSuse using KDE 4 on a desktop here, it joined the AD domain easily and everything works really smoothly with no effort on my part. I really like a lot of the new things in KDE 4 already. I totally agree that students would have the least amount of trouble changing, but I've seen a few little things that staff would like too.

I think the kids would be more willing. If KD4 could work within its typical framework (smaller OS, quicker, needs less memory), this would be interesting to test with a few groups of students. One could ask for volunteers from the students to see who would be interested.
