For all of our classroom video editing projects (such as with iMovie), we have the Canon ZR series. We have different models in the buildings--since we have added throughout over the years, but have had very good luck with them. Those that have gone bad (usually tape loading mechanism)--we send them in to Canon and they are repaired within quick turn around for a minimal amount of money. Looks like they are working on pricing via the IEC site . . .this was on Best Buy just to give you an idea of pricing:

Canon - MiniDV Camcorder with 2.7" LCD Monitor - Silver
Model: ZR960
37x optical/2000x digital zoom; DIGIC DV technology; motion sensor
$249.99
