That is what we did Karl. We replaced all our networking with HP Procurve
and they have mini-gbic converter that go right into the switch itself. No
extra piece of equipment.

First thing you need to know is what the highest speed your switch can
handle is, is it 10/100 or 10/100/1000? It doesn't do any good to put in
a gigabit media converter if the highest speed your switch can do is
100Mbs.

The best solution would be to replace your existing switch with a switch
that not only has Ethernet ports but also has the capabilities to accept
a gbic or mini-gbic that way you can connect your fiber directly to your
switch without the need for the media converter.

OK, I found out why one wing of my building had such terribly slow
network speeds. There is a 10meg Media converter running to that end
of the building. How do I know what to replace it with, I don't know
much about fiber. THe patch cable connects to the switch in this
closet and then fiber runs to the other closet. I have attached a
picture of what is currently in there.
