The hard drive problem is solved. We ran the HD diagnostic test and it
failed pretty bad. There's a whole cluster of bad sectors. I swear
this is the last Western Digital to ever come into this house. This
makes the 4th one to go bad in three years.
I am going to buy him an IBM ... the prices are so low we can afford
to get a 30 GB for about $130. Thanks for all the tips on what to look
for. I am just glad nothing important was lost. I'm also inclined to
believe it was the bad sectors which caused autorun not to work.
