Name brand doesn't mean much if you do not have good tech support when
you need it. Gateway is extremely good quality, and even higher up on
my list with tech support. We bought a new Gateway after going thru 13
different brands in one year, You know the deal, go to Best Buy and get
something and get it home and doesn't work right. Return within 14 days
and get something else. Finally all that ended with the Gateway. By
the time the warranty was up, I was comfortable in trying to upgrade it
on my own. Then I got tired of having to share it with my wife so I
built my own. That started me building and selling for others. Now they
are so cheap it is hard for me to compete with the price.
The point is, shop around and inquire about the warranty and how it
will be repaired and who is going to do it. Also when you need to talk
to somebody about drivers or tech support find out if it is a toll call
and how long you will have be on hold. Compaq is extremely bad, and
most of the folks there don't speak that great english. I would suggest
going to a local Gateway store if you have one close and see what they
can do for you. How much do you want to spend and what do you want to
do with it? What is it to be used for, Game, Word Processing,
Crunching numbers, Surfing the web? It makes a difference in the price
and peformance as to what processor is in the box. I just say an ad on
tv for Dell, complete unit for $800, if you do not need all of it then I
would think they would allow for the stuff you don't need or buy it all
and sell what you don't need. If you have access to Sams Wholesale I
saw Hewlett Packard there a couple of weeks ago for $650 complete.
Just make sure whatever you get does not have Cyrix for the processor.
