Several possibilities come to mind. The first and most common is overheating. Make
sure all your fans are working properly. The second is perhaps the power supply isn't
large enough for the MB and chip. The third one is a defective motherboard.

A fourth that just came to mind is a virus/worm. Make sure that your anti-virus
program is up to date and that you do a thorough scan of the system. Do a thorough
Scandisk/Defrag also. Defrag shouldn't be needed but it wouldn't hurt. The Scandisk is
needed, especially as the hdd was 'acting up'.

Subject: * informant * computer shuts down

A few days ago my husband had to replace the motherboard and power
supply in his computer. His hard drive was acting up so he reformatted.
He's installed Windows 98, Norton Utilities 2000, the drivers for his
system and the Windows Critical Update (from the Windows page). Now his
computer shuts down about 5 minutes after it boots. We've never
encountered anything like this so are totally lost. Does anyone have any
idea on what's going on and how to fix it? Thanks!
  Jeannie
