[iMS] OpenNMS Intermittently Fails

Our IMS SMTP service is intermittently not answering service polls from OpenNMS.  We've never had an issue with email not being able to be sent to our servers, but this intermittent problem makes me think that if the service isn't answering for OpenNMS, then maybe possibly it's not answering when other mail servers try to send us email.  I was just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of issue, and if anyone can give me any direction in what to do to test and/or fix this problem.
