Thanks. This does help a lot!

We still have one area where we need help. We are preparing to implement a module to throw out badly formed addresses before sending to iMS, however we are concerned that if we don't use the same criteria that iMS uses, some addresses that iMS will silently fail will still get through and we will lose tracking integrity.

Howie, is there any way we can get some low level documentation on the good/bad email address criteria iMS uses?

Thanks,

David Droddy

Subject: RE: [iMS] iMS Post blackhole?

I haven't tested this lately, but I had a logging problem in past. ReportPostStatus has always reported deliveries properly, but not failures. I now only record failures through the postfail template. In the postfail template, MX failures need to be handled differently than other failures. When mail to one domain fails, postfail only gets hit once, regardless of how many recipients there are.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [iMS] iMS Post blackhole?

We are experiencing a challenge with the way iMS Post deals with certain email jobs we throw at it.

Apparently, iMS does not return a status or ANY information for certain addresses sent to it.

We have a very thorough tracking system and need to have information about the result of every attempt we make to send a message but sometimes, nothing is returned by reportPostStatus.

Is there any log setting or other area where we can find this information?

Are there certain types of email addresses (perhaps malformed) or DNS lookup results that iMS will not even attempt and therefore will not return a status for? If so, is there any documentation on the exact criteria iMS uses for this sort of silent rejection. If so, perhaps we can modify our own system to use the same criteria to reject and log/track these attempts without even pushing them to iMS.

Thanks,
