Well, yeah, it would fit, but you'd have 35 MB left before you'd hit the default free space percentage that UFS would set for a 3072 MB partition (mkfs_ufs(1M)'s notes on 'free' indicates a default 2% margin allowance for this size), and that doesn't seem like a real good idea. We're a little more conservative than that, even, as we require at least 5% (maybe more, I'm not particularly familiar with that code so I don't know which number ends up being used in reality) of free space, so on that basis you'd need to allocate at least 3127 MB for the 2978 MB reported size.
