Did it leave a log file in /var/tmp? Does "find /var/sadm -mtime -5"
show any interesting log files?

Do you really need to upgrade to S10u5, or can you simply patch? The
vast majority of bug fixes and features are delivered via patches.

Documentation says that Live Upgrade with zones is only supported 10u4
or later but this *may* be a simplification of a longer answer. As
far as I know the fixes and features that make Live Upgrade with Zones
possible are delivered by the SUNWlucfg package (pkgadd -d
/cdrom/Solaris_10/Product SUNWlucfg) and several patches
(http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-9-72099-1).

There is a reasonable chance that installing the latest 10_Recommended
patch bundle will get you the fixes/features that you need today and
set you up for being able to use Live Upgrade in the future.

Of course there is always Sun support... the bits that are giving you
headaches are not open source so it makes it more difficult for those
outside of Sun to troubleshoot the problems you are having.
