How does IPS solve the problem of things which MUST be run prior to
the reboot?  (Adding device drivers mostly)?

But isn't the point of your rant that "adding run at boot" things will
make some of the debugging harder?

I certainly don't like "run at boot" as it also implies "must reboot";
but that can be addressed by also allowing for "immediate scripts",
say "if $ROOT == / && script-immediate then run now".


The crappiest bit of "run at boot" is GNOME post run; it takes to long and
it just generates stuff which is basically the same after each install.
