As you mentioned one would like to know where on earth the installer is stuck if it gets stuck and there is no disk activity. Either a scrolling display or a way to see the current snapshot of the log will be useful. The scrolling display need not be displayed by default. It only appears when a button is pressed. In addition modern Widget toolkits including GTK have a feature where a rapidly increasing list or textarea display does not force the scrollbar down if a user is manually scrolling it.
