It's been a few weeks since I last posted an update on the activities of
the Solaris Installation team, so I thought we should celebrate the
solstice with the current news.

Today I've posted a very high-level component diagram [1] and near-term
roadmap [2] and related notes [3] for the Caiman program [4] (if you
haven't read at least the final sections of this last reference, the
previous ones will probably be somewhat hard to understand).

The near-term roadmap describes very tersely what the Caiman team is
doing for the next 3-6 months. In a nutshell:

- investigation and evaluation of technologies for the installation
engine and disk partitioning is underway
- a team has been formed to start on the replacement of the venerable
sysidtool(1m)
- the Live Media project should be open soon (I know I said this a while
back, but it really is getting closer)
- we now have an engineer actively working on open-sourcing the
remainder of the current installation code
- ITU improvements are coming, and we're thinking about how to make it
even better

We also are progressing on the Zulu project, which will introduce
complete upgrade support for systems with Zones, replacing the solution
currently used in Solaris 10 Update releases. It's occurring to me as I
write this that we haven't posted any docs related to that project to
the community. I'll see about doing so soon.

We'll be continuing our efforts to bring more of our activity out into
the community for wider participation, but if there's something in
particular that you think we could be doing better to foster this
community, please let us know.

Dave
